The Films of Agnieszka Holland

September 24-25 at the Bloor Cinema. Toronto

Oscar-nominated director Agnieszka Holland will speak about her life and work at the Polish Jewish Heritage Foundation"'s "Agnieszka Holland Film Festival".

The Festival will feature "Europa Europa" on September 24 and the first Canadian screening of "Angry Harvest" on September 25, at the Bloor Cinema. Ms. Holland will be speaking on September 25.

"Angry Harvest" was Ms. Holland's first feature film in 1981, starring Armin Mueller-Stahl. It is a drama about a Polish Catholic farmer harbouring a female Jewish refugee during World War II, and was nominated for an Oscar.

"Europa Europa"was her second feature in 1990, a story of Jewish survival in a Nazi uniform which brought her instant fame and was nominated for an Oscar.

The same year, she wrote the screenplay for Andrzej Wajda's "Korczak".

Ms. Holland was born in Poland in 1948. Her mother was a Polish journalist, and her Polish-Jewish father, a sociologist and a political activist. She was only thirteen when her father died tragically in unexplained circumstances which could have been a suicide or a political murder by secret police. In the anti-semitically charged atmosphere of Poland in the late 1960s, Holland could not study her chosen craft in her native country - and completed the FAMU film academy in Prague.

Today, Ms. Holland has garnered many awards and is internationally acknowledged as an independent film director of formidable skill. She is presently finishing a film about the life of Beethoven.
