REMEMBRANCE DAY CONCERT
November 10, 2005 at 8:00pm
In St. Joseph's Church
(corner of Cumberland & Wilbrod Streets) Ottawa.
Featuring University of Ottawa
Orchestra under the baton of David
Curie.
Soprano soloist Maria Knapik
The concert will be dedicated
to the millions of victims of the Second World War.
Victims of Holocaust, genocide and mass murder in all
occupied countries.
The University of Ottawa Orchestra
will perform, supplemented by select members of The
Ottawa Symphony especially invited for this important
performance. The Orchestra will be under the direction
of University of Ottawa Professor and Director of the
Ottawa Symphony, David Currie. The vocal soloist will
be Maria Knapik.
The concert is organized through
the collaborative efforts of: The University of Ottawa,
Department of Music and the Embassy of the Republic
of Poland;
The event is supported by the
Polish Canadian Congress, Canadian Jewish Congress,
and Association of Polish Combatants, The Polish-Jewish
Heritage Foundation and other organizations and sponsors.
Admission is free. A free will
offering of CAD 10.00 is suggested.
The program includes:
1) Adagio for Violins by American
composer Samuel Barber. This piece is the composers
most recognized piece and was played at the funeral
of President John F. Kennedy.
2) Elegia, a piece for orchestra and soprano with lyrics
based on "Eulogy for a Polish Boy" by Krzystof
Kamil Baczynski. This work was composed especially for
this concert and dedicated to Maria Knapik by Polish
Composer Peter Paul Koprowski who resides in Canada
and who will be at the concert.
3) The main work featured at the concert will be The
Third Symphony, "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs",
by H.M. Gorecki. This is a beautiful work for orchestra
and soprano. The Third Symphony was awarded a Grammy
Award and has sold millions of copies world-wide. It
is the largest selling classical CD of all time.
This concert has all the elements
of being a truly memorable event. It will be transmitted
on several TV and radio stations. Attending the concert
will be senior elected government officials, international
diplomatic corps and University officials. For all music
lovers, this is an exceptional opportunity to listen
to wonderful music, performed by an excellent orchestra
as well as by internationally known and appreciated
soprano, Maria Knapik.
