News of the Day from the
Irena Sendler Project
24 October 2003
The Karski Award for Valor and
Courage celebration at Georgetown
University in Washington, D.C. was outstanding. (we'll
have pictures soon on the web site) Here's why.....
The ceremony honored Irena in
such wonderful ways and with many beautiful words. Irena
and her courage was the central theme, along with everyone
making a difference in the world.
The First Lady of Poland - Jolanta Kwasniewska, came
from Warsaw to present the award to Irena on behalf
of her husband, the President, and the country of Poland.
She was most gracious and kind with comments about Irena
and the Life in a Jar project.
Elzbieta Ficowska (rescued by Irena) was present from
Warsaw to accept the award on behalf of Irena. She brought
a replica of her famous SILVER SPOON and presented it
to the students to use in their presentations. It was
so nice seeing her and we thank her for the kind gifts.
Bozenna Gilbride of Long Island, such a kind friend
to the project and the producer of the films on Zegota,
came to surprise us. Thanks for the nice gifts
