Rabbi Emanuel Rackman's and Stephen
Wagner's essay is entitled:" Philo-Semitism in
the Work of the Polish Nobel Laureate Czeslaw Milosz:
He pays tribute to Jewish Literature. "
" I am honored to enter Rabbi Emanuel Rackman's
and Stephen Wagner's essay into the Congressional Record.
It is important to recognize the contributions made
by Jewish authors to Polish literature. The Polish Nobel
Laureate Czeslaw Milosz's strong admiration for Polish-Jewish
writers, especially Chaim Grade, exemplifies this phenomenon,
" said Rep. Engel.
Czeslaw Milosz and Chaim Grade
were both born in the city of Vilna in early 20th century
Poland and enjoyed celebrated literary careers. Milosz,
who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980,
is among the most highly regarded authors in Polish
history. His works have included award winning collections
of poetry, novels, and histories of Polish literature.
Chaim Grade, a Polish Jew and survivor of the Holocaust,
led an illustrious career in the field of Jewish literature.
His novels and poetry focus on Jewish survival after
the Holocaust and the spiritual struggles of Jews. "
It is Chaim Grade's absolute objectivity and utmost
spiritual and intellectual honesty that inspired Czeslaw
Milosz, " write Rackman and Wagner.
" I have a deep respect for
the literary accomplishments of Chaim Grade. For several
years, I have been working to protect the works of Chaim
Grade, " said Rep. Engel.
